"When the boys came to us it felt like it was always destined for them to be with us. We’ve got an amazing family unit and they’ve enriched not only our lives but all of our extended families’ lives as well."

Shelly and Isla's story

We’re an LGBT couple from Lancashire. We met through work around 10 years ago and have been together ever since!

We’d always spoken about wanting to have a family, but we were waiting for the right time. After waiting for the “right time” we realised that there was no such thing! After deciding to start looking into ways to expand our family we first looked into IVF and other fertility methods but after doing the research into those we decided that adoption would be the best route for us.

We contacted Adoption Lancashire & Blackpool after seeing an advert on Facebook and started our adoption journey. Our social worker was so supportive every step of the way and answered all the questions and concerns we had.

Eventually we were matched with 2 brothers who have turned our lives upside down in the most amazing ways! The biggest difficulty we’ve had is getting used to the amount of toy cars and dinosaurs strewn around the house.

At first, our friends and family couldn’t believe we jumped in feet first taking on a toddler and a baby at the same time – but as we weren’t used to anything different it just felt normal for us. Initially it did take some getting used to, but slowly they just became part of the normal routine.

Right now they’re at such a cool age where they play together and have little chats. For us we wanted a sibling group as we thought it would be beneficial for the boys to have someone else alongside them who had the shared experience as they grew up.

Going through the adoption process felt like it was taking forever, but also went so quickly. Our social worker came in to see us regularly and marvelled at how calm we both were with the change in our lives. Because we have a solid foundation to our relationship, having the boys and becoming parents just became the next step in our journey together.

When the boys came to us it felt like it was always destined for them to be with us. We’ve got an amazing family unit and they’ve enriched not only our lives but all of our extended families’ lives as well. It was definitely the best decision we’ve ever made!
